Horndean 1935 – Cycled Aldershot to Weymouth
by Richovery
I bought this postcard from Oswestry at the same time as the gents in a boat I posted a few weeks ago wouldham 1932
I’m unsure if they are the same group of gentlemen but this is one of my recent favourites as they all look so happy with their bikes!
The reverse of this postcard has more information and reads: Horndean 1935 – Cycled Aldershot to Weymouth
‘Aggy’ Weston-‘Mash’ Evans-‘Snerge’ Prince- ‘Hank’ Cottingham-‘Pony’ Moore-Self “Ruby’ Redlar-‘James’Whitmey
Aldershot to Weymouth is well over 100 miles so these chaps must have been fit!
So different from today’s bikes ! And not to mention the clothes !
The bikes do look different, no dropped handlebars in sight!
Those bikes must have been so uncomfortable, not to mention how restrictive the clothing looks. I wonder how many days they took to do the 100 miles. I cannot imagine they were able to do it all in one day with that equipment.
The bikes do look like bone crunchers! I think they would have had to cycle from dawn til disk to cover those miles in one day.
And not any lycra in sight!!
No but they did have extremely long socks to tuck their trousers into!

The best nicknames, too.
[…] One of the Weekly Blog Club mantras is ‘a blog can be an image with a few sentences about it’ and this week we’ve had a couple of bloggers proving the point perfectly. First up is Janet Davis who takes us on an Urban walk February 2013. I’m a big fan of the walks which Janet shares with us; she sees some amazing images along the way, which others may miss. Another blog I am also fond of is the Lost and Found blog where Richard Overy shares historical photos. This week Richard shares a group of chaps with their bikes in Horndean 1935 – Cycled Aldershot to Weymouth. […]
Aggy Weston is likely to be Angus Weston. Wrongly noted as Agnes Harold Weston in the 1911 census aged 6 living with his parents who managed the Royal Victoria Hotel, St Leonards on Sea in Hastings.
Thanks Debbie, sorry for the delay in responding. Where do you find all this information? : )
